On any given day, I have the opportunity to chat with PR pros from around the globe. Sometimes these practitioners are technologically savvy, but most times they're not. Truth is, the majority of them have been pumped full of webinar statistics that mean absolutely nothing to their company or client's bottom line. They've learned to choose numbers on a spreadsheet over genuine engagement and actual sales or attendance.
I've come to the conclusion that as a result of "new PR technologies" like k…

What’s PR 2.0?
You’ve discovered PitchEngine because you’ve engaged in social media. You’ve had a conversation with a peer, you’ve seen a few tweets, or you’ve read one of the many reviews about this new web app called, PitchEngine. You see, the way you discovered us is precisely what makes PitchEngine so different. We didn’t send you bulk mail, we didn’t call you on the phone or include you in a giant, mass email campaign either. You found us through the social web -- where it’s more abo…

Time was, being branded as an outlaw was a desirable thing. True American icons like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson made a living from the label.
In today's social media culture, participants are quick to jump on the unethical or non-authentic users who label themselves "experts", "gurus" or those who just plain "don't get it". Aside from those cheese balls, there are real wranglers threatening to populate the space with useless tweets. They are spammers, modern d…

Unless you're an SEO-type who relishes keyword content in your url, or a PR pro sending your news through a traditional wire service, a shortened url is a quick way to help your readers share your content. If you want your news article, blog post or press release to get viral why not make it easier on the reader by including a "pre-shortened" url?
I've begun to include a shortened url inside each of my blog posts and will continue to use them in my social media releases (SMR). The easiest…

Last night, I spent a couple hours on
journchat, a weekly media and PR chat developed and moderated by
Sarah Evans, a Mashable contributor and PR pro. While the topics are wide-ranging and cover both sides of the aisle, one topic seems to always inject a fair bit of negativity into the discussion, especially from the journalists' perspective: the dying newspaper industry.
Today, I read a blog post from my mentor, B…

I was unfamiliar with the whole
Twitter tag concept until my journalist friend
Gina LaGuardia (@GinaLaGuardia) Twitter-tagged me to share seven interesting, eclectic, unique, WOW-Who-woulda’-thunk-it?! facts about myself. Talk about putting me on the spot, right? As a former broadcast journalist, I consider my ad-lib skills to be pretty solid, so here goes...

Being a startup comes with its challenges. Being unique or innovative comes with more. Like educating potential users and competitors about your services. Over the past couple months as
PitchEngine has begun to take a foothold on the "hot new PR tool" spot, I'm inundated with questions and comparisons to other services and offerings out there. Most of the best questions come from early-adopting PitchEngine users who are simply jumping-in and loving it. Our to…

It's been four months since we flipped the switch on the Beta version of PitchEngine and I'm thrilled at the progress we've made. As I take a step sideways (for a brief moment), I'm reminded of how we got here and why this thing called social media is so darn powerful.
The network where this post resides was created as a place for media and PR pros to share their experiences with social media. I launched it here on
Ning in April 2008 and immediately…

Last week, I cleared my head of this Twitter Monetization idea I dubbed,
TweetRocket. My thought was a sort of newbie Twitter directory that could help new users, while at the same time, give Twitter an opportunity to make some money off advertising, listings, etc., The goal was not to impose on my fellow tweeters - at least not by limiting their tweets or current functionality like some bloggers out there had sugges…

This is a fast paced, digital world we're in. Sometimes when you get caught up in the excitement of social media, new technologies and new methods of communication, it's easy to outpace someone, especially those new PR and media pros discovering all this for the first time on a daily basis.
So, today I'm taking you all back to the basics. For some, it will be a welcome resource. For others, I hope it's a refreshing look at what social media offers media relations and some of the new tools…

As I continue develop and build
PitchEngine, more and more PR and internet marketing experts reach out to offer insight and sometimes even functionality to our web app. In a few short months I've discovered there is a lot more to media relations than the basics I grew up with. Gone are the days of writing a press release and sending it to the local newspaper or trade pub. These days, it's about more than a catchy headline and good writing. It's about keywords…

As most of you know, PitchEngine is officially in beta and Newsroom functionality is live. What does that mean to PR pros like you?
Let's start with the Social Media Release
I guess the best way to explain our current SMR capabilities is to compare it to a Word doc. The SMRs allow you to pack-in digital content and easily share that PR content with journalists and bloggers.
